Background
Users, User Roles and Permissions
In Elastic Path Commerce 6.1, Users are the individuals who use the Commerce Manager and other back-end services, such as web services. Users are internal to your organization and should not be confused with storefront customers. User accounts are managed using the Elastic Path Commerce Manager.
Each Commerce Manager user has certain permissions, as defined by their User Role. These permissions allow or restrict the user's access to activities within Commerce Manager, such as viewing a customer's order or adding a new product to a catalog.
Three User Roles are provided by default with each Elastic Path Commerce installation. They are Super User, Commerce Manager User and Web Services User. Most organizations will want to add user roles to provide their staff with permissions reflecting only the tasks they perform within Commerce Manager.
It's important to note, that any users who will work with the Commerce Manager must be assigned the Commerce Manager User role; without that role, users cannot log into the Commerce Manager. On a related topic, the name of that user role might give you the impression that it grants users permissions for most functions in Commerce Manager, however that is not true. In fact, the Commerce Manager User grants little beyond basic log-in permissions. Detailed descriptions of the user roles are provided in the "Default and Optional Permissions" section of the Commerce Manager User.
